While there is no lack of interest from stakeholders when discussing climate change, there is a need for transparency in land use monitoring approaches that can be easily used by various actors to achieve goals.
This is easier said than done. Measuring the success of global goals in the Paris Agreement, and the National Contribution Commitment (NDC) of each country in the land use sector requires Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) of greenhouse gas emissions from conversion, degradation and deforestation.
In addition, this data is needed not only from the interests of government actors in charge of climate change. The needs and wishes of civil society, the private or public sector concerned to be able to access this information reliably, accessible and comprehensible is increasing.
Opportunities to link and mobilize diverse actors towards a common ground of land use transparency standards became the subject of discussions in a session entitled 'Transparency monitoring climate and development goals' at the Global Landscape Forum (GLF) in Bonn, Germany recently.
Panelists from diverse backgrounds discuss the issue of independent monitoring inhibitors and, in particular, why data transparency is so important.
Christopher Martius, chair of the climate change research, energy and development team of the International Forest Research Center (CIFOR), opened the only session discussing the monitoring in this Forum.
"While working on this project, it appealed to me when so many friends came from the biophysical and monitoring sides. For them, it becomes important to check the accuracy, completeness of coverage, completeness of the data set and so on. We also have friends from the social side. It is also important for them to gain transparency, justice and participation, and access to rights, "said Martius. "So, I think, interesting to bring these topics in this session."
